evening updates
Anderson Cooper’s blog (who knew) is about Madagascar today; he brings up a lot of good points that aren’t usually touched in media these days. Like why Madagascar is important to the planet.
And from the U.S. Department of State:
Madagascar’s political crisis has entered a dangerous phase. The country’s political leaders and their supporters must urgently commit to resolving their differences through dialogue. A national conference that includes representation from all sides in this dispute is the best mechanism to move the country forward. It promises a frank exchange of views under the auspices of the United Nations facilitator. We urge all sides to seize this opportunity now to demonstrate responsible leadership and commit to attend and abide by the outcome of such a conference.
Resolution of the difficult issues at stake is a matter for the Malagasy people. Most importantly, this crisis must be resolved in a manner that is consistent with the constitution and democratic values. Extra-legal assumption of power by civilians or the military is unacceptable.
